Whitworth Can't Stop George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Whitworth had three players reach double figures in kills, but the visiting Pirates could not stop the George Fox attack, falling 30-27, 32-34, 30-22, 30-17 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at Miller Gym.

Sarah Rusch had 19 kills and six blocks to lead Whitworth (9-10 overall, 4-6 NWC), but the Pirates dropped their third in a row on the three-match Oregon road trip. Cassie Moore, playing her third match at outside hitter, finished with 17 kills and 22 digs, while Nikki Bardwell added 10 kills and 12 digs. Bethany Castilleja led all players with 36 digs and Holly Ridings dished 50 assists.

Elizabeth Anderson led the Bruins (9-8, 4-6) with 16 kills and six blocks, while Jessica Morrison added 13 kills.

Whitworth led the first game 23-18 before GFU went on a 9-1 run to take a 27-24 lead and eventually won 30-27.

The Bruins led the second game 23-20 before Whitworth went on a 6-1 run to lead 26-24. The Bruins took a 32-31 lead before the Bucs scored the final three points to win their only set of the match.

George Fox did not trail after an 8-8 tie in the third game, then won the fourth game easily after an 11-1 run gave the Bruins a 20-12 lead.

Whitworth will try to break the losing streak next Friday night when the Pirates host Willamette at 7:00 pm.
