WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Whitman College gained revenge for a mid-season loss at Whitworth University, this time defeating the visiting Pirates 30-25, 30-19, 36-34 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Wednesday night at Sherwood Center. The Missionaries improved to 12-11 overall, 8-7 in the NWC, while the Pirates fell to 10-15, 5-10 while suffering their fourth straight loss. Cassie Moore had 10 kills and 17 digs for a Whitworth team that could only hit .061 in the match. Sarah Rusch added nine kills and three blocks. Bethany Castilleja finished with 25 digs. Whitman's all-star middle blocker Rosa Brey had 18 kills. The Pirates led the first game 18-13 before the Missionaries went on a 12-1 run to take a 25-19 lead. Whitworth got within 27-24 after a service ace by Rusch, but Whitman won 30-25. The Missionaries used another big run to pull away from an 18-15 lead in the second set, finishing with a 12-4 spurt to win 30-19. The third game was close throughout and Whitworth had three opportunities at game point. But Whitman closed out the match with a 36-34 win. Whitworth will conclude its season on Friday night when the Pirates host Lewis & Clark College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. |
