THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Whitworth University struggled to a 1-3 record this weekend at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic hosted by California Lutheran University. The Pirates complete their non-conference schedule with a 7-5 record. The Pirates opened the tournament on Friday afternoon against UC Santa Cruz, dropping a hard-fought match. The Banana Slugs pulled out a 27-29, 26-24, 25-17, 25-27, 15-13 win after Whitworth could not hold a 23-20 lead in the second set. The Bucs also trailed 10-4 in the fifth set before rallying to within 14-13. Ka'ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) led Whitworth with 12 kills, while Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) and Tracy Schwada (Jr., RS, Whitefish, Mont.) each added 11 kills. Click here for Whitworth's stats from this match. The Pirates could not keep up with host Cal Lutheran in the second match, losing 25-15, 25-18, 25-22. The Regals hit .246 as a team, compared to Whitworth's .074. Alex Bolduc (Fr., OH, Hana, Hawaii) came off of the bench to lead Whitworth with six kills. The Bucs bounced back on Saturday afternoon to play their best match of the tournament. Whitworth defeated Chapman (6-3) 25-19, 25-15, 25-22. The Pirates hit a tournament-high .291 during the match, led by Kaimi Rocha's 15 kills and .406 hitting percentage. Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.) had five kills with no errors and added four blocks. Jordon Hoffnagle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) led Whitworth with 17 of the team's 32 assists. Morgan Veleke (Jr., OH, Kennewick, Wash.) came off of the bench to lead the Pirates with seven kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Alli Giusti (Fr., DS, Spokane, Wash.) led Whitworth with 12 digs.
