SPOKANE, Wash. -- Lewis & Clark College finished its Eastern Washington tour by beating Whitworth University 3-1 (27-29, 25-18, 25-20, 25-18) in a Northwest Conference volleyball match Saturday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Leading the Pioneers (7-6 overall, 2-0 NWC), Margaret Dowling accumulated 21 kills and 11 digs. Jessamy Holland added 10 kills and Lou Ohki 18 digs, while Katherine Fiedler dominated the net with 8 blocks. L&C hit .204 in the match.

Whitworth (8-6, 1-1) was led by Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) with 14 kills and 12 digs. Ka’ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) contributed 12 kills, Jordan Hoffnagle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) had 21 assists and Nikki Bardwell had a team-high 17 digs. The Pirates hit .130 for the match.

The first set began evenly, but eventually saw the Pioneers take to a 17-11 lead. The Pirates fought back to within two points as Ka’ipo Rocha served two aces. Trailing 24-21, Whitworth fought off three set points and eventually won the set 29-27 a kill by Kaimi Rocha.

Whitworth came out strong in the second set with kills by each Rocha. However L&C came back to grab an 18-10 lead as Holland pounded down three kills. The set ended 25-18 on a service ace by Ohki as the Pioneers tied the match at 1-1.

The third set began with a block by the Pioneers’ Sarah Hall and Kelsey Clark, but the Bucs went to an early 6-3 lead on kills by Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.) and the Rocha sisters. After that, Lewis & Clark took control of the net with three of Fiedler’s blocks, and ended the set 25-20 on a kill by Holland.

In the fourth set L&C grabbed a 7-3 lead and the Bucs never recovered. Kelsey Neussl served up three aces in the set and Fiedler had two more blocks. A late Whitworth surge took the Pirates within six points, but the Pioneers held on and ended the set 25-18 on a kill by Dowling.

Whitworth continues conference play at George Fox University next Friday at 7:00 pm. Lewis & Clark will travel to Linfield and play Friday at 7:00 pm.
