Holly Tomlin led Whitworth with 5 kills

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Nothing went right for visiting Whitworth University in a 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 loss at Pacific University in a Northwest Conference Volleyball match on Saturday night.

The Pirates (8-8 overall, 1-3 NWC) hit a season-low -.017 in the match, with 28 hitting errors to only 26 kills in 117 attempts. Meanwhile the Boxers (4-8, 3-1) hit a solid .250 in the match and finished with 8 team blocks to only 3 for Whitworth.

Whitworth never led in the first set, falling behind 14-8 on a kill by the Boxers' Caitlin Gollehon. The Boxers went on to win 25-15 on a kill by Melissa Dunn. Whitworth hit .000 in the set, while Pacific hammered home .333 of their attacks.

The Pirates led the second set for much of the early going, taking a 10-8 lead after a kill by Morgan Veleke (Jr., OH, Kennewick, Wash.). But Pacific went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-11 lead and the Boxers didn't trail again by less than three points, eventually pulling out to the 25-18 win. Again the Pirates struggled at the net, hitting -.059 with eight kills against 10 errors.

Like the first set, Whitworth never led in the final set of the match. But the Pirates hung close through the first half, pulling within 12-10 on a kill by Kathy Taylor (Fr., MB, Kent, Wash.). But the Boxers pulled away from there, taking a 19-13 lead on a kill by Dunn and winning 25-18 after back to back Whitworth attack errors.

Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.) led the Pirates with five kills and two blocks. Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) also had five kills. Alli Giusti (Fr., DS, Spokane, Wash.) had 15 digs to tie for match high honors.

Gollehon finished with 15 kills and 15 digs for the Boxers, while Melissa Dunn added nine kills and 10 digs. Kelsey Takashima led Pacific with five blocks.

Whitworth will have to regroup quickly because the Pirates return home to host defending Northwest Conference champion Pacific Lutheran University next Friday in the Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
