Bardwell had 7 kills and 10 digs for the Bucs

TACOMA, Wash. -- Whitworth played just well enough to stay close to 18th-ranked Puget Sound on Friday night, but could not avoid being swept by the Loggers 26-24, 25-23, 25-19 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match at Stadium High School.

Ka'ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) and Nikki Bardwell (Sr., OH, Colville, Wash.) led the Pirates with seven kills each. Bardwell and Bree Riddle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) had 10 digs apiece, while Riddle and Jordan Hoffnagle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) each dished 12 assists. Whitworth hit .149 for the match.

Lindsey Denman and Kalli Kamphaus led UPS with 12 kills each. Kelsie Telge had a match-high 11 digs and Jamee Fred finished with 37 assists.

Whitworth (13-12 overall, 6-7 NWC) led much of the first set and took its largest lead at 13-10 on a kill by Bardwell. But the Loggers went on an 11-4 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Pirates fought back to tie the set 22-22 after an ace by Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) and a Logger error. The teams tied twice more before UPS closed out the set on kills by Kamphaus and Denman.

The Loggers (15-6, 10-3) started quickly in the second set, grabbing a 10-5 lead after a kill by Denman. But Whitworth rallied to tie the set 11-11 after an ace by Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.). UPS went back on top and led 24-19 after a Pirate error, but Whitworth rallied and forced a Logger timeout at 24-22. Riddle's ace pulled the Bucs within one point, but UPS closed the match after a ball handling error was called on the Pirates.

The Loggers only trailed once in the final set (1-0) and led 5-2 and 10-5. But Whitworth again rallied to pull within 11-10 after a UPS error. After a ball-handling error pulled the Pirates within 14-13, the Loggers went on an 8-3 run and led 22-16 after an ace by Telge. Trailing 24-17 the Bucs scored twice on kills by Bardwell, but UPS finished the match on a Kamphaus kill.

Whitworth continues its tough trip to Tacoma on Saturday with a match on 17th-ranked Pacific Lutheran at 5:00 p.m.
