SALEM, Ore. -- Led by Jessica Durham’s 21 kills and 18 digs, Willamette University defeated Whitworth University 19-25, 25-15, 25-15, 17-25, 15-12 in a Northwest Conference Volleyball match on Friday night in Salem, Ore. Jessica McGraw added 15 kills and 17 digs to help the Bearcats power over Whitworth. Christina McGilvray contributed 10 kills and Clare Chedester led the team in assists with 47. Willamette hit .280 in the match. Despite hitting .310 in the match, Whitworth was plagued by 10 receiving errors. Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) led the Pirates with 13 kills and 12 digs, Ka’ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) fronted the attack with 15 kills, and Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.) also had 13 kills. Tracy Schwada (Jr., RS, Whitefish, Mont.) slammed two early kills in the first set to help Whitworth get up 2-1. After service errors on both ends of the floor kept the teams close at 9-8 in favor of the Bucs, Whitworth took over with its 17 kills in the set, versus Willamette’s 9 kills. Kaimi Rocha’s fifth kill in the set ended it 25-19. The second set opened with a 4-0 Bearcat run, led by Annika Moffett at the net and a service ace by McGraw. Jessica Durham slammed down six kills to lead Willamette’s control of the set as Whitworth struggled with attack errors, hitting just .107 in the set. Durham finished the set with a kill 25-15. The third set opened 3-3 until Willamette pulled ahead 14-6. More kills by Durham and McGilvray kept the Bearcats in a comfortable lead. Tomlin led the Pirates with three kills in the set, but Whitworth continued to struggle as it again fell 25-15, this time on a kill by Mcgraw. Whitworth came out looking to bounce back in the fourth set. Tomlin and Kaimi Rocha had a kill each to take Whitworth up 8-3. Nikki Bardwell (Sr., OH, Colville, Wash.) served two aces to give the Pirates a 19-11 lead, and capped it off with a kill to end the set 25-17. Whitworth hit .533 in the fifth set, its highest percentage of the match, but still fell 15-12. The set began with a kill by McGilvray and an ace by Kellie Mengini to lead 2-0, and Durham knocked down six kills to take a 13-6 lead. Tomlin led a short run by the Pirates to come within two, but the match was ended on a Whitworth error. Whitworth fell to 11-10 overall, 4-5 in the Northwest Conference and will continue play Saturday night in Portland against Lewis and Clark.
