Whitworth Finished Third at Own Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University swept and was swept in two matches on Saturday's final day of competition at its own volleyball ivitational on Saturday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse. The Pirates defeated fellow Northwest Conference member Whitman College 25-18, 25-22, 25-15, then lost to NAIA power Lewis-Clark State 25-21, 25-14, 25-18.

Whitworth had a chance to play 14 players in the match against Whitman. Kaimi Rocha (Fr., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) led the Pirates in kills for the fifth time in eight matches this season with 14. Ka'ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) added eight kills and a team-high four blocks. Alli Giusti (Fr., DS, Spokane, Wash.) started at libero and came up with a match-high 21 digs.

Whitworth would not keep up with the powerful Warriors in the final match of the tournament. The Pirates led much of the first set, forcing an LCSC timeout at 13-8 after a kill by Holly Tomlin (Sr., MB, Kirkland, Wash.). But the Warriors rallied to go ahead 19-17 and eventually won the set by four. Whitworth would not be able to grab a lead in either of the final two sets.

Tomlin, Kaimi Rocha and Tracy Schwada (Jr., RS, Whitefish, Mont.) each had seven kills to lead the Pirates. Bethany Castilleja (Sr., DS, Kennewick, Wash.) led the Bucs with 14 digs. Jordon Hoffnagle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) and Bree Riddle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) had 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

By finishing the tournament 2-2, the Pirates took third place overall. LCSC (4-0) won the tournament, followed by Menlo (3-1). Montana Western (1-3) was fourth and Whitman (0-4) was fifth. Both Kaimi and Ka'ipo Rocha were named to the All-Tournament team. The Warriors' Anile Clemente was the tournament's MVP.

Whitworth will travel to Thousand Oaks, California next weekend to compete in the CLU Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic. On Friday the Pirates will play UC Santa Cruz at 2:30 p.m. and the host Regals at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday Whitworth will take on Chapman at 11:30 a.m. and highly-ranked Cal State East Bay at 2:00 p.m.
