Pirates Unable to Finish in Nightcap
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Whitworth University could not sustain momentum in its opener, then could not close the door in the night cap, losing both matches on the first day at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic. The Pirates played perhaps their best set of the season in the opener against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. But the Athenas bounced back to win the match 15-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-11. The Pirates were blown away in the first set against host California Lutheran University, but rebounded to win the next two stanzas for a 2-1 advantage. After rallying from a 13-4 deficit to tie the third set at 16-16, Whitworth could not close the deal. Then the Regals pulled out a closely fought fifth set to take the match 25-10, 25-27, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13. The Pirates dropped to 3-6 this season. Match statistics are not available. Whitworth will complete the tournament on Saturday with matches against sixth-ranked University of La Verne and 16th-ranked Trinity University (Texas). |
