Pirates Hope to Continue Improved Play
The Whitworth volleyball team hopes to continue to show the improved play that lifted the Pirates to second place at the Colorado College Pikes Peak Challenge last weekend when the team competes this week at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic hosted by Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. Whitworth bounced back from three losses at home to open the season by finishing 3-1 in Colorado Springs. The Pirates earned straight-sets wins over Benedictine, Wis.-Stevens Point and Kenyon, losing only to host Colorado College. Kaimi Rocha (So., OH, Pukalani, Hawaii) and Ka'ipo Rocha (So., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) were both named to the all-tournament team. Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic Schedule/Results Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is Whitworth's first opponent at CLU. The Athenas went 2-2 at last week's Pacific Coast Classic, including a 3-1 win over fellow NWC member Lewis & Clark. Host Cal Lutheran comes into the weekend 1-3 after playing in a tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The Regals had to play Trinity (Texas) twice, losing 3-2 in the final match of the tournament. La Verne comes into the weekend 3-1 and ranked 6th in the most recent AVCA Coaches Top 25. The Leopards also participated in last weekend's Pacific Coast Classic. The Pirates will finish up against 16th-ranked Trinity (Texas). The Tigers are 5-2 this season after going 2-2 at their own River City Classic last weekend. Following the trip to Southern California, Whitworth will begin Northwest Conference play the following weekend at home against Linfield (Friday) and Willamette (Saturday). |
