“The Albatross about my neck was hung” Photographs by Chris Jordan

Date:
Friday, Dec. 2, 2016

Time:
10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Description:
The Whitworth University Art Department is proud to present five photographs from Chris Jordan’s series entitled Midway: Message from the Gyre. Since 2009, Jordan has repeatedly traveled to Midway Atoll to document the albatross living on the island. The photographs show the bodies of chicks who have died because their parents inadvertently ingested plastic debris while gathering food and then regurgitated it for their offspring. Unable to digest the trash, the chicks die of starvation or toxicity. As the bodies decompose, the startling contents of their stomachs are exposed.

The five photographs in the exhibition were recently added to the Whitworth Permanent Art Collection with the support of the Floyd and Shirley Daniel Endowment, which was established in 2008 to support photography and the role of photography in the arts, creation-care programs and environmental and sustainability education for students.
