Journey to Tibet Film

Date:
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013

Time:
6:30 p.m.

Description:
The Whitworth Department of History presents a special showing of rare film footage made by Disciples of Christ missionary Grace Young, who traveled through China to Tibet in 1931. The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Burnley, Assistant Vice President of Diversity and professor of history, will provide an introduction to the film. Dr. Burnley’s remarks will contextualize the missionary history of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This silent film from the Disciples of Christ Historical Society Archive includes scenes of missionary travels through Asia, life in Tibet, and rare scenes of Tibetan Buddhist dance. Also shown are scenes of Chinese troops entering Tibet during this time of turbulence and transition.
