| Clergy & Lay Leadership:
Advent Sermon Text Study |
Those who preach regularly know how challenging it
is to get fresh insights on scripture passages as
well as illustrations and other insights that make the passages come alive.
The sermon-text study is designed to offer the opportunity for pastors to gather
once each week ffor six weeks during Advent to critique and
discuss the sermon texts they'll be addressing during the Advent season.
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 2, participants will gather each Wednesday
from noon-1:30 p.m. at Manito Presbyterian Church. Each participant will
be asked to bring the sermon texts s/he will preach on during
Advent and to provide any initial exegesis/sermon development s/he has done
on the text. Each participant will have an opportunity to share his or
her text for an upcoming sermon and get exegetical insights, illustration
ideas, and suggestions on how to structure the sermon and preach the text, as well as other helpful feedback from the group. The Rev. Scott Starbuck (Ph.D.
in Old Testament, Princeton Seminary), pastor of Manito Presbyterian Church,
will facilitate the gathering and the discussion. Additional dates are:
Nov. 9, 16, 30, Dec. 7, 14. The great ideas and helpful insights gained
from this hour-and-a-half each week will give pastors a wealth of sermon material
that could save many hours of struggling with what to preach and how
to preach it. There is no cost for this text study, and lunch will be
provided free of charge.
