Scholarship & Faculty Development: Public Lectures (Archive 2002)

Lecture series:

  • June 3-26, 2002, Whitworth's Dr. Jim Waller directed a seminar entitled "Deliver Us from Evil: Genocide and the Christian World." The seminar was designed for faculty members of the Lilly Fellows Program Network, a group of church-related colleges and universitites that provides a national forum for exploring issues of common concern. The seminar's object was to encourage academics in church-related higher education to critically examine the role of the Christian churches and individuals in 20th century genocide and the subsequent consequences for Christian thought and practice in the contemporary world.
The three and a half week seminar featured several key speakers and topics:
    • Week 1: The role of the Christian churches in genocide, facilitated by Victoria Barnett, author and translator. Barnett also presented a public lecture, "Bystanders During the Holocaust: Lessons for Us Today," on June 6.
    • Week 2: Disciplinary perspectives for studying genocide and the Christian world, including addresses by Dr. James Waller (Psychology), Laurie Lamon (English), and Dr. John Yoder (Political Science).
    • Week 3: Consequences of genocide for Christian thought and practice in the contemporary world, facilitated by Stephen Haynes, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Rhodes College. Haynes also presented a public lecture, "Noah's Curse: The Biblical Justification of American Slavery," on June 20.
    • Final three days: The role of the Christian world in post-genocide healing and reconciliation, including a panel of survivors from the Holocaust and Rwandan genocides.
Each seminar participant took part in common reading assignments, seminar presentations and contributed a paper to be submitted as part of a collection of interdisciplinary essays for publication in the Journal of Genocide Research. Contact Dr. Jim Waller for more information.

  • April 29, 2002 at Saint Louis University, the Center for Faith and Learning, along with Ethics Across the Curriculum, Manresa Catholic Studies at Saint Louis University, and the Lilly Grant "Voices" Project, sponsored a Faculty Colloquim on the topic of "The Human Person, Faith, and the Professions." The faculty panel featured Sarah Legett, M.D. (Pediatrics), Dr. Robert Bolla (Biology), Dr. Eddie Clark (Psychology), and Dr. Donald Stump (English), and novelist Richard Dooling, author of Brain Storm, Critical Care, White Man's Grave, and Bet Your Life (forthcoming fall 2002).

  • Parker Palmer, education activist, author of books on vocation and teaching, and senior associate of the American Association for Higher Education, lectured on the topic, "Educational Reform from Inside Out," on March 7, 2002. Palmer's lecture was co-sponsored by the Center and the Lilly Endowment Grant.

  • Christian futurists, authors, and husband-and-wife team Tom and Christine Sine presented a lecture, "Social Justice in a Post-9/11 World," in February 2002. The Sines also discussed "Preparing Students for Lives of Commitment in the Third Millennium: A Christian College's Obligation."

  • Author, educator, and renowned neuropsychologist Malcolm Jeeves lectured in January 2002 as part of a program co-sponsored by The John Templeton Foundation and the American Scientific Affiliation to promote dialogue about science and religion. Jeeves' lecture, "Changing Views of Human Nature: Christian and Neuropsychological Perspectives," was hosted by the Department of Psychology and the Center for Christian Faith and Learning.
