I"Gravitas"

Some souls have enough spiritual mass to attract others.  They have gravitas.  This makes the soul appear old, but gravitas has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with scars that have healed well, redeemed failures, forgiven sins, and thorns that have settled into the flesh. It all expands the soul until it is larger than the body that contains it, large enough to hold the truth of the Word of God.
Monday: Matthew 3:13-17: "Is the Pleasure of God Enough?"

Workshops

M. Craig Barnes
"Who Is the Pastor's Friend?"

Pastors lament few things more than their lack of authentic friends. There are reasons why it is difficult to maintain healthy friendships as a pastor, and there are greater reasons for doing it anyway. Like all spiritual disciplines, the nurturing of friends is critical to the life of the soul. This workshop will explore the challenges to finding friends in the ministry and strategies for meeting those challenges.

Steve Hayner
"Unbinding the Gospel:  Evangelism for the Rest of Us"
Presbyterians are generally skittish at even the mention of the "e" word. And when they start talking about evangelism, it sounds a lot like a membership- management conversation: "How can we attract more people to our church, and then retain them after they visit?" We will explore the challenges and strategies for evangelism today with very practical help for church communities who want to learn to share the Good News more effectively.

Bill Robinson: Leadership and Ministry

Sharol Hayner: "Praying Our Way into the World": Prayer and the Missional Church

Karen Peterson Finch: Ecumenical Exploration of Grace

Adam Neder: "God is God": Karl Barth and Recent Atheism

Moses Pulei: The Health-and-Wealth Gospel and the African Identity

James Edwards: The Catechetical Church

Dale Soden: "Doing Church in the Pacific Northwest"
Findings from the recent book The None Zone: Religion and Public Life in the Pacific Northwest.

Suzette McGonigal: Spouse-Support Workshop
A time of sharing and encouragement for pastors' spouses.  Issues include freedom to be one's self at church, the pedestal problem, a clergy spouse's sense of identity and calling to ministry, his/her relationship to members of the church, children of the pastor and spouse and their spiritual growth and congregational expectations, moving from one ministry to another, family competing for a spouse's time and energy, and a spouse's own need for support.

Discussion format.  Those who choose just to listen are welcome.

McGonigal has spent many summers with spouses of people in various ministries, facilitating small-group interaction.  She currently serves on the counseling staff at Whitworth.
