Whitworth University Haiti Response

Haiti Response

Whitworth community,

We are excited to inform you that the campus has raised nearly $4,000 toward the rebuilding and relief efforts in Haiti. As many of you know, Whitworth has adopted Three Angels Children's Relief, a nonprofit orphanage, clinic and school in Port au Prince. All funds raised will be given to aid the people of Haiti through this organization.

If you are interested in learning more about Three Angels, click here. We ask you to continue to pray for the people of Haiti. The story has faded from the media spotlight, but the rebuilding process, which will take years, has only just begun. The buildings will go back up, but broken lives will take even longer to repair.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in some way to the Haiti earthquake response effort thus far.  For those of you who wish to support the effort, please click here. You can also drop off checks in the Whitworth Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement, Weyerhaeuser 104; make your check payable to "Whitworth Students4Giving." There will also be opportunities this semester to support the relief effort at student/staff/faculty-organized fund-raisers, so be on the lookout for opportunities to support both Haiti and groups on campus. If you have an idea for an event, please click here; you may also click on this link for additional information about our relief efforts.

Message from the Three Angels Children's Relief Organization

MAKE A DONATION

As many of you know, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti, was struck by a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake Jan. 12, 2010. The Angel House Orphanage, managed by the Three Angels Children's Relief Organization, was destroyed. Facilities included a two-story orphanage housing approximately 44 children, a clinic for medical care of the children and local needs, a school to educate neighborhood and local children, and a guest house located nearby that serves dual roles as a home for boys taken off the street, and the place adoptive parents stay to meet and interact with their children.

The actual orphanage building has sustained damage, the children are currently sleeping outside. We do not know the status of the clinic and school though it is safe to assume if the children are sleeping outside, the buildings are not safe to sleep in (fear may be a factor). The walls protecting the building have collapsed, leaving the women and children exposed to potential looting. The guest house (which was a 5/6 story building), has completely collapsed, injuring some, including the house manager, and one guest is still unaccounted for in the structure.

Whitworth University has decided to assist them. Through various fundraising efforts, we hope to raise sufficient funding to assist them with providing basic needs such as food, water, medical supplies and shelter. This is an effort in which everyone can participate. We are in the process of formulating plans with the colleges and universities in Spokane to provide a coordinated response and maximize our collective efforts.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of the entire nation of Haiti, and to the orphans and relief workers at Three Angels orphanage. A link to their website is provided for your perusal. Please continue to monitor www.whitworth.edu/haitiresponse for additional information, ongoing fundraising activities and online donations. Collection receptacles are currently being placed throughout the campus.
