Julianne Lucks

Anticipated graduation year: 2010

Major: English (writing track)

Hometown: Idaho Falls, Idaho

Whitworth activities/clubs: Laureate Society, Global Servants and Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society. Some of my friends and I also have our own writing group.

Favorite books: Far From the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy, The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, A Room of One's Own, by Virginia Woolf, An Acceptable Time, by Madeline L'Engle, The Bible – truly, Chasing Redbird, by Sharon Creech, and the Nancy Drew series

Favorite foods: Chocolate-covered strawberries and fettuccine Alfredo

Favorite movies: Pretty much the last one I've seen at any current time, unless it's horror. I don't like the horror genre. It serves no purpose but to give people nightmares and psychotic ideas.

Best class: Women Writers, with Laurie Lamon. She opened my eyes to an entirely new side of writing and poetry with that class. As cliché as it sounds, she allowed me to think I'm capable of changing the world if I want to, no matter what I do. The class was such a calming environment, open to discussion and opportunity.

Favorite place or hangout on campus: On the grass. It doesn't matter where, specifically. I love how, right when the warm weather arrives, the entire campus seems to relocate to the lawn. Also, the coffee shop is amazing.

Favorite thing about Spokane: Manito Park. It's absolutely beautiful, especially when the weather is cooperating. That's where I like to go to get away from the madness of university life. :]

Why I chose to attend Whitworth: Best Whitworth moment or experience: My experiences here just keep getting better. Last night, for instance, my friends and I spent four solid hours just playing Frisbee and laughing to the point of exhaustion. It was awesome. I never know what's going to happen next, but that's part of the thrill of it.

Advice for incoming students: The smallest thing can create enough chaos in your life to make it seem like your world is crashing down. Look beyond what's making you stress. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably not that important, and if it is, it'll work out one way or another eventually. No worries. Enjoy the moment.

What I plan to do after graduation: I don't know what God has in store for me, but whatever it is, I know He'll equip me and be there with me every step of the way. I'm curious about the unknown that is my life, and I'm content to enjoy every minute of it.
