Pamela Anderson

Anticipated graduation year: 2010

Majors: Chemistry; Spanish

Hometown: Eugene, Ore.

Whitworth activities/clubs: Pre-Med/Science Club, Spandex Optional Club, dorm medic

Favorite food: Lemon poppy seed cake with raspberry filling

Favorite quote: "It seems that life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all have confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be obtained." – Marie Curie

Favorite guilty pleasure: I love any Latin American dances: tango, salsa, merengue etc.

Favorite off-campus study program experience: During Jan Term 2008, I went to Guanajuato, Mexico, with other students from Whitworth. We stayed with host families, took classes at the local university, and followed Mexico's Road to Independence. It was a life-changing experience that was both fun and challenging.

Favorite place or hangout on campus: The Back 40 is undeveloped land that is still considered part of Whitworth's campus. The trails that cut through the pine trees provide an excellent escape from studying.

Favorite thing about Spokane: Besides the amazing skiing, hiking, and other outdoor-friendly places around Spokane, there are some unique places that are perfect to study or just hang out in. My favorite is Pleasant Blends, a coffee shop about three minutes away from campus that reminds me of a visit to my grandma's house.

Research/special projects I'm involved in: In January 2009, I assisted Dr. Kerry Breno with her research on organometallic catalysts, and I was able to continue this research into the spring. More specifically, we were researching the synthesis and polymerization of ethylene gas using green chemistry principles.

Activities/clubs/events that students shouldn't miss: There are numerous events, activities and clubs at Whitworth. However, I would like to point out En Christo, which is a student-run club that hands out sack lunches to the homeless and the low-income in downtown Spokane. This is an amazing opportunity to be more than a college student and to serve others outside of the Whitworth community.

What I plan to do after graduation: I plan to study and volunteer in Latin America for two years. Then, I will attend medical school and combine my passions for science and Spanish as a bilingual doctor.
