The arts bring to human experience the delight of the beautiful, the challenge of the provocative, the potential for meaningful interpretation of our lives – individual and communal – and comprehension of the Divine. Central to Whitworth University's identity as a Christian liberal arts institution is the conviction that the arts, in all of their expressions, are an authentic part of our spiritual nature. Being creative in our own lives helps us understand what it means to be made in the image of God.

Whitworth's music, theatre, dance and visual arts programs are widely recognized for their excellence in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives, and for entertaining and challenging audiences through their acclaimed exhibitions and performances. An outstanding faculty, active in their own creative disciplines and dedicated to the art of teaching, work closely with nearly 200 students majoring in the arts and with hundreds more who enroll in their courses and participate in productions, concerts, exhibits, worship services and other programs at the university.

In addition, all Whitworth students complete the university's hallmark three-course worldview studies curriculum, which explores how humans understand and interact with the world of ideas and how the arts can both express and challenge prevailing political, religious and social assumptions.  Students also complete at least one course in creative expression and appreciation as part of their general educational experience.

So, regardless of whether Whitworth students major in the arts, they are challenged to understand and appreciate the arts. And, in so doing, they better understand themselves as well as their relationship to the Creator and to the created world.
