Four Years of International Students: 1953-56
This picture taken in 1954 is of the first students that made up the Cosmopolitan Club, which was the precursor to the current International Club on campus today. The club was initiated on part by President Warren, himself a missionary to Japan in the 1920s before coming to Whitworth College to be the 16th president in 1940. The purpose of the club was to promote mutual understanding between cultures and enhance Christian friendship, as well as provided assistance to international students who were adjusting to American life. Along with learning about each other’s cultures and languages, members participated in an international banquet in the spring. By far the highlight of the year, students served food from their countries and provided the entertainment. This tradition continues to this day. Countries represented at this time were Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Kenya, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Poland, Indonesia, Latvia, Liberia, Kenya Colony, Lebanon, and including U.S. territories such as Alaska and Hawaii. Native Americans and missionary kids also joined the group to share their cultural experiences. All of the students from this picture impacted campus life with their participation in various activities. Let’s see what some of them did while at Whitworth! We’ll begin with September 1953………
