The Early Years
When R. Fenton Duvall was six years old, his father died after falling off a ladder and fracturing his skull. With five children and no money, Duvall’s mother struggled until he went to work while in high school. He simply could not attend college until his sister, a gospel music singer and married to a radio evangelist, used her connections to get Duvall a job in a quartet for the radio show. After attending school, Duvall received a letter from President of Whitworth College Frank Warren asking Duvall to come to Whitworth. Duvall later said that “Dr. Warren was so impressed with my credentials and my recommendations that he offered me a job.” Packing up his family, Duvall moved out to Spokane from the east and began teaching in 1949.
