Japanese immigrants began arriving in America in the late nineteenth century. Issei worked in back-breaking jobs on railroads, on farms, in the logging industry, and in people’s homes as servants. They expected to earn their fortunes quickly and return to home to Japan. However, many Issei were not able to make enough money and became “stuck” in America.
