Influences of World War I
Hairstyles and facial hairstyles for men greatly changed during the war years. Prior to World War I men grew their hair sometimes to shoulder lengths and often grew extensive beards and moustaches. Unfortunately, serious hygiene issues arose regarding long hair and vermin during the unsanitary living and fighting trench conditions in World War I. As a result, beards and moustaches disappeared nearly overnight and hair became close cropped around the head in the military fashion. Hairstyles for women also changed during the war years. Women began to use their natural hair, rather than elaborate wigs or extensions, to create new styles. The hair was usually brought over the ears and then set upward and back from the crown rather than straight on top of the head. Soft waves created with the help of a curling iron were usually accented with a variety of pins, combs, flowers, and even jewelry.
