General Biographies, Autobiographies and Slave Narratives in Paper

There are a large number of general biographical information and personal papers of leading individuals influencing the history of the United States and all subjects of slavery, civil war and reconstruction.

To find books in the Whitworth Library Collection check the Library Catalog . To find out how to borrow books directly from Gonzaga, the Spokane Community Colleges or the Northern Idaho Academic Libraries use Winborrow. If books are not available from those libraries you may also get them through Interlibrary Loan.

Published Slave Narratives include those of the following people in our collection but many others as well.

Olaudah Equiano, Booker T. Washington, Harriet A. Jacobs, Sojourner Truth, William and Ellen Craft.

There are personal and political papers reprinted on most of the leading political figures of the time period including:

Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant and others
