Images for Education and Scholarship

ARTstor is a digital library of art images, associated information and software tools designed to enhance teaching, learning and scholarship. ARTstor contains over 400,000 images from a wide range of cultures and time periods. To enter the ARTstor Digital library click on the links above or go to the Databases and Indexes link on the Whitworth Library homepage and select Art from the subject menu or ARTstor from the Alphabetical list. Also listed on the Multimedia page.

ARTstor collections are comprised of contributions from museums, individual photographers, scholars, special collections at libraries, and photo archives. Full collection descriptions are available linked from each collection title. Publication and copyright restrictions are noted with each image. All are available for general scholarly research and teaching, some are public domain and others have publication rights attached for specific purposes.

How does ARTstor define "art"?

ARTstor's definition of "art" includes architecture, painting, photography, sculpture, decorative arts and design, as well as archeological and anthropological objects, and visual and material culture more generally. They actively seek out collections that are of interest to users across the humanities and beyond. For more detail on specific disciplines see below

Do I need special software to access ARTstor?

ARTstor makes collections available without requiring subscribers to purchase any third-party software. The tools that users may utilize to access the ARTstor Digital Library online are browser-based and require no software downloads; the presentation tool (OIV) does require a software download which is available through the online ARTstor application.

ARTstor requires the use of Internet Explorer version 7 rather than 6. You may upgrade your browser if needed to view ARTstor. Firefox 2.0 +; Safari 3.0+ and PWB 2.10+ all work as well. And the screen resolution must be at 1024 x 768 pixels or higher. ARTstor works with Macs. Refer to the System requirements page for more detail.

Do I need to register to use ARTstor?

No, you do not have to register to use ARTstor.

Unregistered Users : can search, browse, view images, save, print data and images, and view content in shared folders

Registered Users: can (in addition to above) save Image Groups, add Personal Notes, register to view contents of password protected Shared Folders and download the Offline Image Viewer.

Instructor Privileges User: Create Shared Folders, add Instructor Commentary and create Personal Collections. Faculty may obtain Instructor Privileges by emailing nbunker@whitworth.edu

Can users make use of their own images along with the content in ARTstor?

ARTstor recognizes the importance of enabling users to view and make use of their own images along with content from the ARTstor Digital Library. ARTstor users are able to do so in two ways: either by adding local images to presentations made in the Offline Image Viewer or by uploading images to the ARTstor server via the "personal collections" function.

How can I find out more about using ARTstor for my discipline?

The ARTstor Digital Library serves users both within the arts and in disciplines outside of the arts. Scholars from many fields find value in including ARTstor images in their research and teaching.
