Whitworth Professors Among 30 Presbyterian Scholars Selected for National Conference on Christian Education
Whitworth professors Arlin Migliazzo and Dale Soden are among 30 professors at Presbyterian colleges and universities nationwide invited to a conference on how Christian faith influences the content and method of teaching. Whitworth was one of only three schools to have two representatives selected for the "Consultation on the Vocation of the Presbyterian Teacher," scheduled for Aug. 10-13 in Louisville and Danville, KY.
"I hope to get a better sense of the nature and extent of faith-learning dialogue within the Presbyterian college network," Migliazzo says. "I am always looking for more resources to bring to our work here at Whitworth that will increase our ability to bring issues of faith, values, and liberal arts learning together both in the classroom and in our co-curricular activities in appropriate and significant ways."
Soden, a history professor and director of the Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith and Learning at Whitworth, is co-authoring one of the papers that will be discussed at the conference. The paper will address the role of Presbyterian colleges and universities and their relationship to the church. The other paper to be discussed at the conference will be on the Presbyterian tradition of teaching.
"The time is right for a reconsideration of the relationship between the Presbyterian Church and its colleges and to explore ways in which a stronger connection is mutually beneficial," Soden says. "The focus of this conference is consistent with the work of Whitworth and the Weyerhaeuser Center in terms of supporting the church and promoting the integration of faith and learning in the classroom."
The conference is sponsored by the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities along with Centre College. It is funded through a grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.
