Whitworth Student-Musicians Swing with the Best at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival
The Whitworth College Jazz Ensemble I and several individual student-musicians won top-tier awards at the 33rd annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held last week in Moscow, Idaho.
Whitworth's Jazz Ensemble I took second place in the college/university division of the competition on Feb. 24. The ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Dan Keberle, placed ahead of Central Washington University, Gonzaga University, Lewis and Clark State College, Pacific Lutheran University, and Utah State University. The ensemble has won first place three times in the last four years.
"I am very proud of the jazz program and the high-quality music students we have at Whitworth," Keberle says. "The students played extremely well - they swung like a professional band and received the only standing ovation of the day from a large audience."
Festival judges also honored senior Eric Gruber with a first-place award in the bass solo division, and senior Mike Jones took first place in the trumpet solo division. Senior Bryan Swenland was named best jazz band drummer.
Festival adjudicators comprised jazz educators from colleges and universities around the country.
