Whitworth Student Awarded Pew Younger Scholars Graduate Fellowship
Matt Lockard, a senior at Whitworth College, was recently awarded a $26,000 Graduate Fellowship by the Pew Younger Scholars Program. The fellowship provides a $13,000 stipend for the first and dissertation years of Lockard's graduate study.
The fellowship is portable only to highly ranked Ph.D. programs in the humanities and social sciences at major universities, and must be matched with a significant financial aid contribution by the university. In nearly all cases, the matching aid is a complete tuition waiver for the five-year period of the fellowship, plus assistantship stipends in the third and fourth years of study.
Lockard, a 3.9 math and philosophy double major from Yucaipa, Calif., has applied to Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Notre Dame, UCLA and Stanford. He plans to earn a Ph.D. in philosophy, and then teach at a college or university and conduct research in philosophy.
Lockard was one of 68 students nationwide who applied for the humanities division of the Graduate Fellows Program. Typically 10 finalists are chosen, but this year, because an unusually high number of qualified candidates submitted applications, 12 finalists were selected. Lockard and the other 11 finalists were flown to the University of Notre Dame January 22 - 23 for an intense interview session. Lockard was interviewed by a panel of two Pew representatives and three scholars who are known for excellence in their fields of expertise.
Shortly after returning to Spokane, Lockard learned that he had been selected as one of five recipients of the prestigious Graduate Fellowship.
The Graduate Fellows Program aims to strengthen evangelical scholarship by providing for the preparation, training and encouragement of Christian scholars in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to assisting students with their graduate education, one of the program's highest goals is to involve students in networks with other Christian scholars - both students and senior scholars.
Whitworth College, located in Spokane, Wash., is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
