Whitworth Rises to Ninth in U.S. News Rankings of Colleges in the West

Whitworth College was named one of the top colleges in the West in U.S. News & World Report's 2001 College Rankings survey. The annual survey, which ranks the academic excellence of colleges and universities by region, placed Whitworth ninth in the 13-state Western region. Categories that were used to determine rankings include academic reputation, retention of students, student-to-faculty ratio, and student selectivity.

Whitworth also is ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report Best Value rankings for colleges and universities in the West.

"It's gratifying to see that the quality of the education at Whitworth and the accomplishments of Whitworth graduates are reflected in the rankings," says Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Tammy Reid.

While outside rankings can be useful, Reid says that Whitworth evaluates the success of its academic program by several other measures. In recent years the college has received very positive reports from accrediting agencies; faculty members have been awarded competitive grants from organizations such as the Fulbright Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts and the National Science Foundation; and graduating students have been accepted into selective graduate programs at Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and UCLA.

Whitworth's focus on academic quality also is reflected in the priorities outlined in the college's $50 million Faith in the Future Campaign. The campaign initiatives include funding for a new academic building, endowed chairs and professorships, student scholarships, faculty development and technology improvements. The public phase of the campaign was kicked off nearly one year ago with $40 million in gifts and pledges raised to date.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The college enrolls 2,000 students in over 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
