Whitworth President Charts New Vision as Spokane Chamber Chair

Whitworth College President Bill Robinson offers a call to action, civility and service as the 2000-2001 chair of the board for the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce. He and other incoming board members will be recognized by 1,200 business leaders Wednesday during the chamber's annual meeting at the Spokane Convention Center.

Crediting the strong leadership provided by outgoing chair JoAnn Matthiesen of Avista Corp., Robinson says the chamber is poised to move aggressively and inclusively to improve the regional economy. The Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce membership includes more than 1,700 businesses representing more than 100,000 residents.

"Committed leaders in the business community now have a shared vision to build on our strengths and focus on common goals that will lift us up rather than pull us apart," he says. "This is a defining moment for Spokane, and we have a great opportunity to take major strides forward."

Robinson, entering his eighth year as president of Whitworth, has led the college to record levels of student enrollment and retention, increased financial strength and heightened external visibility. He also has played an important role in coordinating the efforts of area colleges and universities to support economic growth in the region.

He is a founding co-chair of the chamber's Higher Education Leadership Group, which includes the chief executive officers of 15 area companies and the presidents of Community Colleges of Spokane, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Washington State University and Whitworth. The group has been a focal point for coordination between higher education and the business community on a variety of workforce development, business recruitment and economic development initiatives.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The college enrolls 2,000 students in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
