Whitworth Earns Top-Tier Awards at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

Whitworth College's jazz ensemble and jazz choir, along with guitarist Mike Frederick, won top-tier awards at the 34th annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, Feb. 21-24.

Whitworth's Jazz Ensemble I took second place in the college/university division of the competition. The ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Dan Keberle, placed ahead of Boston College, Gonzaga University, Central Washington University, Utah State University and Pacific Lutheran University.

The Whitworth Jazz Choir won third place in the multi-microphone college/university jazz choir competition, finishing ahead of Boston College, PLU, Pierce College, and Boise State University. The jazz choir is directed by 1994 Whitworth alum Ann Brueggemeier.

Freshman Mike Frederick took first place in the college/university jazz guitar solo competition.

"It is wonderful to see the jazz program here at Whitworth continually affirmed as one of the best in the Northwest," said Keberle. "In the last five years, Whitworth's jazz ensemble has finished first three times and second twice at the Hampton Festival, and we've had numerous students win the solo competition."

Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival adjudicators include jazz educators from colleges and universities around the country.
