Gonzaga, Whitworth Sponsor 'Physics & God of Abraham II' Conference April 2-6
For the second straight year, Gonzaga University and Whitworth College will co-sponsor a week-long series of public lectures exploring the relationship of faith and physics in a conference titled, "Physics & the God of Abraham II," to be held on both campuses April 2-6.
The lectures, which are all free and open to the public, will examine the resources offered by the modern science of cosmology for clues to a better understanding of God and creation. The purpose of the program is to provide university faculty and students, as well as the public, the opportunity to learn from recent work on the relationship of theistic religion and modern physics.
Peter E. Hodgson, head of the Nuclear Physics Theoretical Group of the Nuclear Particle Physics Laboratory at Oxford University in England, will be among the featured speakers. A leading researcher in nuclear physics, he is the author of many books, including, Spacetime and Electromagnetism, and The Philosophy Behind Physics. Also featured will be the Rev. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., professor of philosophy and president of Gonzaga University. He is the author of Healing the Culture and The Spirit of Leadership, as well as many articles on science and religion.
The program will also feature a series of presentations by prominent Christian philosophers, including: Peter van Inwagen, the John Cardinal O'Hara professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame; Del Ratzsch, distinguished professor of philosophy at Calvin College; J. P. Moreland, professor of philosophy at the Talbot School of Theology; and Stephen C. Meyer, associate professor of philosophy at Whitworth College.
This program is jointly sponsored by Whitworth's Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith and Learning, Gonzaga's Institute for Christian Philosophy & the Natural Sciences, and the Society of Christian Philosophers. Additional support is provided by The John Templeton Foundation and Betty S. Wheeler.
