Whitworth Chamber Singers to Perform in Spring Concert May 4

The Whitworth Chamber Singers will perform in a spring concert on Sunday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, located at the corner of E. 24th Ave. and S. Grand Blvd. in Spokane. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (509) 777-3280.

The concert will feature Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, with poetry by Christopher Smart. Whitworth Music Professor Emeritus Michael Young will provide organ accompaniment for the piece. The choir will also perform folk songs and spirituals by composers including Gwyneth Walker, Morten Lauridsen, and William Grant Still.

The 26-voice group, directed by Associate Professor of Music Deborah Hansen, is selected by audition from the members of the Whitworth Choir. The ensemble performs sacred and secular choral literature from a wide range of eras and styles. Concerts in recent years have included madrigals, motets and folk songs from the Renaissance to the 20th century, as well as major works such as Handel's Coronation Anthems.

The Whitworth Chamber Singers perform annually with the Whitworth Choir in December Christmas Festival Concerts presented in Seattle and Spokane, and on major tours every other spring. Reflecting a commitment to music education and excellence, the Chamber Singers have also appeared at regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association.
