Collage Artist and Author to Install Art, Give Slide Show at Whitworth
Collage artist Sabrina Ward Harrison will present a slide show of work from her books, Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself (Villard Books, 2000) and Brave on the Rocks: If You Don't Go You Don't See (Villard Books, 2001) on Tuesday, March 18, at 8 p.m. in Warren Hall Lounge at Whitworth College. Admission is free. For more information, please call (509) 777-4551.
On March 17 and 18, Harrison will also be doing an installation in an alcove in the Hixson Union Building Café. The installation will require 20-25 feet of wall space and will include pictures of Whitworth students.
First published at age 21, Harrison's multimedia works explore the typical questions, confusions, and insights that many young women experience on their journey from adolescence to womanhood.
"We are all facing choices that define us. No choice, however messy, is without importance in the overall picture of our lives," wrote Harrison in Spilling Open. "We all at our own age have to claim something, even if it is only our own confusion. I am in the middle of growing up and into myself. This book is my life in progress."
Publishers Weekly calls Harrison's books "a series of lush and textured collages containing colors, words, drawings, photos and other 'spillings' of self-discovery. Each page requires contemplation and offers innumerable wonders to discover."
Harrison, now 26, lives in New York City, where she creates art, explores the world with her camera, writes, and designs signature skirts. She is also working on her third book.
