Whitworth Students, Faculty and Staff to Volunteer with Local Organizations

WHAT: Whitworth College's annual Community Building Day began more than 100 years ago as a one-day campus cleanup project organized by Whitworth students. Since then, the effort has grown into a tradition in which more than 500 Whitworth students, faculty and staff contribute to and learn from the Spokane community.

"The hope for Community Building Day is not only to improve and brighten the community, but also to enrich students' lives, for, by giving, we also receive much," says Jacob Spaun, program assistant for service-learning at Whitworth.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Whitworth will assist more than 20 Spokane not-for-profit organizations ranging from charities to churches to publicly funded parks. A barbecue for Community Building Day participants will be held from noon-1 p.m. in the Loop at Whitworth and will include live music.

WHEN: Community Building Day activities in the Spokane area will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
