Whitworth String Orchestra to Perform in Dec. 3 Concert

The Whitworth String Orchestra, conducted by Roberta Bottelli, will present its fall concert on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall at Whitworth College. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (509) 777-3280.

During the concert, the student string quartet will perform a movement from Beethoven's String Quartet Opus 18 No. 3. The quartet's performance will be followed by the string orchestra, which will play three pieces, "Hoe Down," from Rodeo by Aaron Copland, St. Paul's Suite by Gustav Holst, and Haydn Symphony No. 47.

"It will be a wonderful concert, featuring some of the classics for string orchestra," Bottelli says.

Bottelli, a cellist in the Spokane Symphony, began teaching strings at Whitworth in 2001 and formally established the string orchestra last year. In addition to conducting the string orchestra, she recruits students and directs the string quartet. Bottelli and Whitworth Music Department faculty plan to create a full symphony orchestra - complete with strings, winds, brass and percussion - within the next five years.
