Children's Author and Illustrator Jasper Tomkins to Lead
WHAT: The 20th annual Whitworth Writing Rally for students in pre-school through 5th grade is an opportunity for children to develop their reading and writing skills with assistance from a professional author and trained educators. The rally will be led by Jasper Tomkins, an award-winning author and illustrator of numerous children's books.
Approximately 800 students are expected to participate in the Whitworth Writing Rally, which is sponsored by Whitworth College, the Northeast Elementary School Principals Association of Washington, Educational Service District 101, and PEMCO.
Each child, accompanied by a parent or guardian, will take part in one of two three-hour sessions. Tomkins will share his stories with participants and then children will spend two hours in small groups creating and illustrating stories. Each group will be led by trained educators with expertise in story telling, writing, illustrating and bookbinding.
After each session, children can attend a reception in Quall Hall at Whitworth Presbyterian Church, which is adjacent to the Whitworth College campus, where they will have the opportunity to share the books they have created. They can also meet with Tomkins in Quall Hall and have him autograph his books, which will be available for purchase.
WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 8. The first session is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second session is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A parent or guardian must accompany each child participating in the rally.
