Whitworth Chamber Singers to Deliver Feb. 29 Preview Performance

The Whitworth College Chamber Singers will perform a preview of musical selections the ensemble will present in March at the Northwestern Regional American Choral Directors Association Convention. The preview concert will take place Sunday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m. at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road. Admission is free. For more information, please contact the Whitworth Music Department at (509) 777-3280.

During the concert the chamber singers, directed by Whitworth Associate Professor of Music Deborah Hansen, will be accompanied by pianist Bonnie Robinson and violinist Elizabeth Webster, and will be joined by the Whitworth College Trombone Ensemble, directed by Whitworth Professor of Music Richard Strauch.

The chamber singers will perform an ethnically diverse collection of 20th century works, including Salvador Brotons' Canco de Nedal, Five Hebrew Love Songs, by Eric Whitacre, Sarba pe scaun, by Alexandre Pascanu, An Hour to Dance by Gwyneth Walker, Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten, a Shaker hymn arranged by William Hawley, and Ride On, King Jesus!, a spiritual arranged by Moses Hogan. The trombone ensemble's performance will include pieces by Bach, Beethoven and Debussy, among other composers.

The members of the 25-voice chamber singers are selected by audition from the members of the Whitworth Choir. The ensemble performs sacred and secular choral literature from a wide range of eras and styles. Whitworth Chamber Singers concerts in recent years have included madrigals, motets and folk songs from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

The Whitworth Chamber Singers were one of six college/university choirs from the Northwest selected by taped audition to perform at the 2004 American Choral Directors Association Convention, which will take place March 3-6 in Boise, Idaho.
