Whitworth Students, Faculty and Staff to Volunteer with Local Organizations

WHAT: On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Whitworth students, faculty and staff will assist more than 20 Spokane non-profit organizations including charities and churches as part of the college's annual Community Building Day. Begun more than 100 years ago as a one-day campus cleanup project organized by Whitworth students, Community Building Day has since grown into a tradition in which more than 500 students, faculty and staff contribute to and learn from the Spokane community.

"The purpose of Community Building Day is to encourage students to get out of their comfort zones and help different organizations in the Spokane community with a few of their many needs," says Whitworth senior and Students Eager to Respond to Volunteer Endeavors Coordinator Jessica Chapman. "The hope is that students will love what they do and will want to go back and become regular volunteers at these places."

A barbecue for Community Building Day participants will be held at noon outside the Hixson Union Building at Whitworth.

WHEN: Community Building Day activities in the Spokane area will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to between 11:30 a.m. and noon.
