Whitworth Students Excel at NATS District Competition

The melody of the last aria has faded, the adjudication forms are filed, and the results of the recent National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition are a sweet accompaniment for the Whitworth Music Department.

Whitworth, which hosted the district competition at its north-Spokane campus Nov. 13, had five student winners out of the eight prize-winning divisions.

Whitworth students who placed in their divisions include two first-place winners, Kyrsten Hafso, '07, and Lindsay Delmarter, '05; and three second-place winners, Heather Botts, '05, Hannah Kimball, '06, and Daisy Nau, '05.

Twelve schools from Yakima, Wash., to Caldwell, Idaho, brought 167 singers to participate in the competition.

"I'm very proud of what Whitworth accomplished in the voice division of the competition," says Adjunct Music Professor Marjory Halvorson. "I think their success is due in part to the large sense of teamwork in the Whitworth Music Department."

The National Association of Teachers of Singing, or NATS, is an international accrediting organization for vocal teachers and is at the forefront of pedagogical research, scholarship and professional standards in vocal music, Halvorson says.

Students in each division prepared three songs to perform before a panel of vocal teachers from the participating schools. The fees the students paid to participate in the event were then given away as cash prizes.

The day-long event also demanded much from those who worked behind the scenes, including accompanists, teachers and volunteers.

"This was a huge event for Whitworth," Halvorson says. "It is remarkable that we had 47 student-volunteers who worked all day Saturday to make this event move smoothly."

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college enrolls 2,400 students in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
