Whitworth Wind Symphony to Perform Fall Concert Nov. 14

The Whitworth Wind Symphony will perform its annual fall concert on Sunday, Nov.14, at 4 p.m., in Cowles Auditorium at Whitworth College. Admission is free; a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the wind symphony. For more information, please call (509) 777-3280.

Led by Director and Professor of Music Richard Strauch, the wind symphony will perform pieces including Leonard Bernstein's Slava! and Michael Daugherty's Red Cape Tango, from his Metropolis Symphony, which is based on the myth of Superman. The symphony will also perform March op. 99, by Sergei Prokofiev, and Western One-Step, from Robert Russell Bennett's Suite of Old American Dances.

In addition, the symphony will perform A Festive Tribute to a Friend, composed by former Whitworth music professor Michael Young in honor of Richard "Doc" Evans, a Whitworth music professor who retired in May 2004.

The Whitworth Wind Symphony specializes in the performance of outstanding traditional and contemporary literature for concert band and wind ensemble, and presents several concerts on and off campus throughout the year. The Wind Symphony has been recognized as one of the most outstanding college bands in the region, and appeared in concert at the 1999 and 2001 All-Northwest MENC conventions, and at the 2002 College Band Directors National Association Western/ Northwestern Regional Conference in March 2002.

The group tours every other year, and recent tours have taken the ensemble to Seattle, San Francisco, southern California, and Hawaii. The Wind Symphony has also recorded and released two CDs, In the Spring (1998) and New Century Dawn (2000). Both are available for purchase in the music office and at the Whitworth College Bookstore.
