Whitworth String Orchestra to Perform in Dec. 9 Concert

The Whitworth String Orchestra, conducted by Roberta Bottelli, will perform in a fall concert on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall at Whitworth College. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (509) 777-3280.

"It's going to be a unique performance; we've combined faculty and students in a great program with a lot of variety," Bottelli says.

The concert will showcase two of the most beloved serenades for string orchestra: Serenade for String Orchestra by Elgar and Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky.

The student string quartet will perform the Sextet in B Flat Major by Brahms with faculty members Catherine Shipley on viola and Bottelli on cello. Bottelli will also join student cellist Maren Haynes to play the powerful Concerto for Two Cellos by Vivaldi.

Bottelli, a cellist in the Spokane Symphony, began teaching strings at Whitworth in 2001 and formally established the string orchestra last year. In addition to conducting the string orchestra, she recruits students and directs the string quartet.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college enrolls 2,400 students in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs..
