Whitworth Student Awarded Competitive Public-Relations Internship

Junior Nichole Betts is the third Whitworth student since 2002 to be selected to receive a sought-after Spokane Public Relations Council internship. Betts, a Spokane native and a communication-studies major, was selected for one of three 10-week summer internships, which carry a $1,500 stipend. Betts will conduct her internship with the Inland Northwest Associated General Contractors.

"I am looking forward to this summer with anticipation; I'm excited to work in a different aspect of communications and experience a corporate environment," says Betts, who for the past three years has worked for the Spokane Public Schools Community Relations Department, a nonprofit organization.

In addition to Betts' 2006 selection for an SPRC internship, Whitworth alumnus Ryan Moede was selected in 2003 for an internship at Inland Northwest Health Services, and alumna Caitlin Clapp was selected in 2002 for an internship at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

"As one of the few public-relations internship programs that offer significant stipends and for which host companies are selected on a competitive basis, the SPRC internship program attracts applications from some of the best programs in the region," says Greg Orwig, Whitworth director of communications and past board chair of the SPRC.

The SPRC internship program matches top public-relations students with meaningful internships at SPRC member firms. Host firms compete vigorously to land interns, and successful companies provide real-world experience to students that helps them stand out among other job applicants. This year, a record number of applications was submitted from students at nine schools in five states.

The SPRC is an independent organization of area communications professionals who are committed to effective and ethical public-relations strategies. With more than 100 members, SPRC is dedicated to providing ongoing job-related development and networking opportunities to its members while continually striving to build and promote the value of public relations in the business environment.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college enrolls 2,400 students in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
