Whitworth Alumnus Named NAIA Athletic Trainer of the Year
Jason Durocher, who graduated from Whitworth in 1999 with a master's degree in health, fitness and sports management, was named the 2006 Athletic Trainer of the Year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
The NAIA Athletic Trainer of the Year award honors certified trainers who model athletic training through their personal conduct and professional allied health services to athletes, according to an NAIA press release announcing Durocher as the 2006 recipient of the award.
Durocher says he is humbled to receive the award.
"There are many other talented athletic trainers out there who are just as or even more deserving of the award," he says.
Durocher is head athletic trainer and instructor of physical education at Hastings College, in Nebraska, where he oversees the health needs of 450 student-athletes and supervises 10 student athletic trainers.
"Frankly, I just feel blessed to have such a great job," Durocher says. "What keeps me going day in and day out is knowing that no matter how much I have learned, each new day and each new experience presents another learning opportunity."
While he gained confidence during his athletic-training undergraduate work at California State University, Fresno, Durocher says his graduate work in athletic training at Whitworth helped him sharpen his administrative and leadership skills. "My Whitworth experience really helped me to see the bigger picture," he says. "As an undergraduate student, I spent so much time studying and learning that I didn't gain exposure to what goes on behind the scenes in athletic training, such as communicating with doctors, administrators, faculty, parents, coaches, insurance agents, community and industry leaders, and the media. When I left Fresno State, I was a confident athletic trainer. When I left Whitworth, I was a polished, professional athletic trainer."
Durocher's wife, Caroline, is a 2003 graduate of Whitworth's Athletic Training Education Program; she is an assistant athletic trainer at Hastings College.
