Standout Senior's Campus Includes the World
The President's Cup is Whitworth's highest academic award, given to graduating seniors who have completed their entire undergraduate degree at Whitworth and have done so with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Whitworth has three honorees this year, all of whom have made the most of their education of mind and heart and have graced the college with their excellence.
President's Cup recipient Teranne McComas, whose hometown is "in a mountain valley north of Leavenworth, Washington," is currently looking into the possibility of assisting the director of an African-development ministry based in Israel. Her stint with the program would begin this fall. She also wants to engage in other ministries during her nine to 12 months abroad. Eventually, she hopes to be involved in national or international policy work in health, development, or justice.
With her B.A. in cross-cultural studies and a Spanish minor with a communications emphasis, as well as trips to Israel and Central America under her belt, Teranne has prepared herself well for a future of helping others. At Whitworth she has been a member of the Murdock Cohort #2, the Hosanna worship team, the Latin America Club, the Presidential Leadership Program, the Whitworth varsity track and cross-country teams, and a number of informal small-group Bible studies.
Professor of Political and International Studies John Yoder says of Teranne, "Her campus includes the world. She has taught English and life skills to refugee populations in Spokane, served food at the Women's and Children's Free Restaurant, tutored disadvantaged children in Spokane's West Central neighborhood, lived alongside poor villagers in Central America, and assisted with the First Century Nazareth Village Project in Israel. In both her life and her studies, Teranne demonstrates that faith and knowledge are true only when they take responsibility for the lives of others."
