Samford University Statement

Beck A. Taylor, dean of Samford University's Brock School of Business since 2005, has been elected president of Whitworth University, in Spokane, Wash., effective July 1. He was elected Friday (April 16) by Whitworth's board of trustees.

"I am very excited and humbled by the outpouring of support from the Whitworth community. It is a blessing to be called to lead one of the nation's finest Christian universities, one committed simultaneously to the life of the mind and to the moral formation of its students," Taylor said. "My time at Samford has been extremely rewarding, primarily because of the people I work with and the community we serve. I will always treasure my affiliation with Samford and Birmingham, and I look forward to watching the Brock School of Business continue its rapid ascent to national prominence."

Taylor helped to lead Samford's business school through a significant reorganization, including its naming as the Brock School of Business in 2007. New programs were added in social entrepreneurship and leadership and ethics, and the Samford Business Network was established with regular gatherings in Birmingham, Nashville and Atlanta. Other programs were revamped to meet 21st-century business needs. The school recently was reaccredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB).

Samford President Andrew Westmoreland praised Taylor's leadership as business dean.

"Beck Taylor has provided extraordinary leadership for the Brock School of Business, and we are grateful for his significant contributions to Samford University," Westmoreland said. "While we regret the loss of Beck's leadership at Samford and in the regional business community, we applaud Whitworth University for their pursuit of him."
