Friday, Oct. 21

7 p.m. Whitworth Volleyball vs. Linfield -- Fieldhouse

8 p.m. Hay Fever – Cowles Auditorium

Hay Fever, written in 1924 by the matchless Noel Coward, is best described as a cross between high farce and a comedy of manners. The play is set in an English country house in the 1920s, and it deals with the four eccentric members of the Bliss family and their outlandish behavior when each invites a guest to spend the weekend.

Saturday, Oct. 22

8:30-9:30 a.m.: Tag Pick-up and Continental Breakfast -- HUB
Converse with other Whitworth parents, enjoy hot coffee from your Parents’ Weekend mug, and take a few moments to appreciate the campus on a crisp autumn morning before you head off to your classes.

9:30-11 a.m.: Mini-Colleges
Get a taste of Whitworth's academic life by attending one of these informative and interactive seminars offered by some of our finest faculty. (Choose your class using the online registration form.)

It’s Not What You Know, But How You Know It
Forrest Baird, Professor of Philosophy

This introduction to epistemology and Core 250 will make you think about the way you think.

Vocational Calling and/or Getting a Job
Julia Stronks, Professor of Political Science
I want to care about my child’s vocational calling, but mostly I am worried about the kid getting a job!

Why Should My Student Bring a Passport to College?
Sue Jackson, Director, International Education Center

Explore the study-abroad options available at Whitworth, and learn how, as a parent, you can support your student in selecting a program, experiencing a month, semester, or year away from campus, and processing the growth s/he will experience during this time away

The Social Construction of Reality
Raja S. Tanas, Professor of Sociology
The discipline of sociology maintains that reality is merely a product of the human mind and human activity. In this regard, reality is continually constructed and reconstructed across time and space. Explore this sociological perspective and learn its implications on the revealed truth of the Bible.

The Problem of Pain
Melinda Larson, Associate Professor of Kinesiology & Athletics
Assessing and treating athletes in pain requires more than just knowledge of physiology and therapeutic interventions. This session will introduce the topics of pain perception in athletics, evaluation of an athlete in pain, and holistic pain management by Christian athletic trainers.

The Emerging Adult
Janelle Thayer, Director of Counseling Services
Having your student at a distance can make it difficult to “get” what stage s/he is passing through. Also, as you have learned over the years of parenting, things are not always what they seem. Come find out what issues are most prevalent for this generation and, particularly, learn how to understand what might be going on as your student masters this developmental stage.

11:15 a.m.-noon President’s Address – Auditorium
You are invited to hear an informal address from Whitworth President Beck Taylor, who will welcome all parents and guests to this special weekend.
