Sustainability Challenge

Join the Green Pirate in saving the world!

The Sustainability Challenge (April 7-25, 2008) is a fun competition to educate and motivate students, faculty and staff to be the change they want to see in the world. Each team has two people who "compete" at sustainability by doing simple things like turning off lights and using a reusable mug instead of a paper cup. Presented in three distinct areas of action -- Earth, Air, and Heart -- the program seeks to reduce each participant's ecological footprint.

And if saving the world isn't enough incentive, there's always the great prizes!

The challenge is open to all Whitworth students, employees, faculty, staff, and anyone associated in any capacity with Whitworth (including spouses of the aforementioned and vendors who do business with Whitworth).

The Sustainability Committee
Inspired by a similar program as Seattle University and modeled after the highly successful Anne Carragher Fitness Challenge, Whitworth's Sustainability Challenge asks participants to form teams and abide by the honor system. Participants will award themselves points for reducing energy and water use, as well as for taking other actions that support sustainability.

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword. "For Whitworth, sustainability is a way of life, and the Sustainability Challenge hopes to inspire the entire Whitworth community to look at their actions and make some positive changes," says Assistant Director of Housing (and member of the Sustainability Committee) Alan Jacob. "In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, 'We must be the change we wish to see in the world.'"
