Areas of Specialization / Expertise:
Teacher education (performance-based programs, documenting positive impact on student learning). Technology education: integrating technology into the curriculum, especially in Internet-related areas and elementary mathematics.

Selected Publications / Presentations / Honors:

Washington State Site Visit Accreditation team member at Heritage University (2009), in which he was responsible for assessing all accredited education programs at Heritage University on one of the Washington State Approval Standards.

Served as a representative for Whitworth to OSPI on changing the current PPA assessment instrument for greater external validity (2009).

Appointed to the Washington State Elementary Education Endorsement Committee to review and revise the state's competencies for elementary teachers (2007); invited to be a part of the exam-development team creating the exam for Washington State's elementary education content-area exam (2007); serves as chair of the Professional Education Advisory Board, Teacher Education.

Co-authored a chapter with Barbara Sanders, Dennis Sterner, Sharon Mowry, and Linda Buff entitled "Documenting Positive Impact on Student Learning: A Pre-Service through Professional Continuum," published in Teacher Education Yearbook (2004); received (along with Barbara Sanders) a $5,200 grant from the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for further collaboration with secondary-methods teachers and Spokane-area teachers and principals in the School of Education's extended placement program (2001).

Presentations include: co-presented "Is it Fixable? A Decision-Making Matrix for Candidate Dispositional Issues," for the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges of Teacher Education, San Diego (2011); co-presented, "Preparing and Transforming Diverse Student Leaders to Serve their Communities," at the American College Personnel Association Annual National Convention, Boston (2010); presented workshops to area schools on strategies for adapting to the increasing rate of poverty in student demographics (2007-08).

Chair of the Professional Education Advisory Board  for Teacher Education (2009).

Memberships: National Council for Teachers of Mathematics; Washington State Math Council; Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Awarded the Whitworth College Teaching Excellence Award for 2002. Recipient of the college's annual Faculty Service Award.
