Herbert B. Jones Foundation Grant Program Business Shadow Leader Information

Shadowing
The process of shadowing involves seeing and being part of the myriad tasks of a business manager/CEO. Student shadowers accompany the business professional throughout a series of full or partial work days and are allowed to observe the various aspects of the business person's job or company, i.e. meetings, conferences, phone calls, supervision of employees, decision making etc.

Who Can Participate?
Business Professionals who are interested in helping students learn more about their field of work.

Expectations of Business Shadow Leaders

  • Attend opening event (on campus) to meet students and learn about program
  • Accept one or two students for shadowing
  • Review guidelines below:
    • Plan one full day or two half days on site using guideline suggestions
    • Be approachable, flexible, timely and patient
    • Attend one campus meeting for student and business shadow leaders at semester end, early December
    • Shadow Program will start October 2002

Business Shadowing Site Guidelines

  • One full day or two half days (8 hours) on site
  • Exposure to a typical business day in the company
  • Tour to show how the company operates
  • Observation of mid to upper management
  • Invitations to attend company department/management meetings
  • Brief exposure to business ethics/protocol
  • Use an assessment instrument (provided by the Program) to evaluate the student experience and assess the level of student learning

Student Outcomes

  • Increased sense of networking importance
  • Impact/realization of diverse and varied responsibilities of mangers/CEOs
  • Heightened interest for entrepreneurship career
